How Are We Doing?

November 14, 2016

Matthew 5:1-12 ESV

Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.

2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons[a] of God.

10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

What if Jesus actually meant these words? What if he really wanted us to be peacemakers? What if he really wanted us to see him through every situation. What if he really wanted us to be pure in heart? We seem to put a lot of emphasis on being right lately, myself included, but when I read these words of Jesus I see less of an emphasis on being right and more of an emphasis on showing love, compassion, mercy, and justice. I've been really grieved lately as I watch my friends be torn apart. I am grieved that there are people hurting. I am grieved that there are people that feel their life does not matter. I am grieved that there are people being falsely accused of things that are not true about their motivations. I am grieved that we seem to lose sight of the humanity and Spirit of God in one another. I am grieved that we allow politicians and nationalism to surpass our love for one another. I am grieved that we allow a game, that the media profits off of, to get in the way of us truly loving our brothers and sisters. What if Jesus really meant these words above? And really meant the words that followed it in the rest of his sermon on the mount? If you call yourself a Christian, how are you doing at living this out? I know, honestly, I've allowed the cultural climate to get in the way of me living this out and I can't do that anymore. Will you stand with me as we grieve with those that are grieving? Will you stand with me to fight for our relationships? Will you stand with me to fight for what God has called us to? Will you stand with me to love each other better? We can do better friends, so let's start today by pursuing Jesus and his great commands.

Luke 4:18-19

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
    because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”
