"You lack one thing"

April 23, 2018

Mark 10:21 New International Version (NIV)

21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Mark 10:21 English Standard Version (ESV)

21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

Mark 10:21 The Passion Translation (TPT)

21 Jesus fixed his gaze upon the man, with tender love, and said to him, “Yet there is still one thing in you lacking. Go, sell all that you have and give the money to the poor. Then all of your treasure will be in heaven. After you’ve done this, come back and walk with me.”

I love this verse, especially when it comes to Jesus love for the poor. Jesus calls us to leverage our wealth and power to serve the poor. Part of this is in the expectation of God for us to surrender our whole being to our King. Part of this is a realization that Kingdom Economy is often in opposition to the American Economy of greed.

What stands out to me in this verse is not the expectation of us to share our wealth and power. The thing that stands out to me is that even before the rich young ruler was ready to surrender everything, Jesus looks at him and loved him. You see, Jesus loves us before we have complete obedience. He meets us in the middle of our struggle and shows his tender heart for us. However, Jesus also loves us enough to speak the hard truth into our lives. When we start walking with Him, he calls us out. He shapes our identity. He shapes us into full surrender. He shapes us into his image.

Jesus loves us. Jesus loves us enough to shape us. Jesus loves us enough to call us to full surrender.

The question we must ask is, how will we respond? How will you react when Jesus pricks your heart and calls you to change?
