Be a Leader of Depth

August 24, 2018

“The desperate need today is not for a greater number of intelligent people, or gifted people, but for deep people.”
― Richard J. Foster, Celebration of Discipline: The Path to Spiritual Growth

I have read so many leadership books, sat through so many services and sessions, and watched so many leaders succeed as well as fail. The more aware I am of those leaders around me and the more I realize the need for a commitment to depth of our own personal development and not merely knowledge.

As we develop and disciple those around us we must make sure we are helping them to discover a depth beyond just head knowledge. Depth takes us to new places of discovery of the nature of God and nature of ourselves. Depth goes beyond gifting and talents and into character, strength, and whole person health.

We must look at every area of our life and allow the Gospel to penetrate us. This means our emotional health, spiritual health, physical health, mental health, and our social health. As we are developing a healthy and surrendered life we will be sure to go deeper with our Creator. Jesus calls us to surrender the entirety of our life and to live a life that loves God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. This look a lot like loving God with all of our emotion, spirit, mental, and physical bodies.

To have a depth that lasts we must pursuit the health that God has for us. I do not think there is a perfect balance or a place to simply arrive at, but something to manage as we walk through day after day. As we walk in this daily we will go deeper with Christ and lead better. There is no special formula, and no special leadership book or talk that will do this for you. You have to do the work, which is a daily choice to develop and walk in.
